MAYOR JERRY TREÑAS STILL ‘HANDS OFF’ over community pantries in Iloilo City: says he would rather keep city hall out of barangay volunteer actions and advocacies.
The city mayor maintained his earlier stand following DILG Secretary Eduardo Año’s issuance of “guidelines” for community pantries to coordinate with local government units in their respective areas.
Treñas said proponents of community pantries may only have to coordinate with barangay officials so that minimum health protocols are observed.
So far the putting up of community pantries by individuals and groups of diverse background in many areas of Iloilo City have defied early red-tagging and intimidation from elements of the military and police.
Even local radio stations and some barangay officials in the city have joined the fray on community action that seeks to alleviate hunger amidst the lingering pandemic.
