CAP OF 6,500 DAILY TOURISTS “A SMALL NUMBER”: tourism secretary open to review Boracay’s carrying capacity.
Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco will look into the allowable carrying capacity of Boracay island as a tourist destination, according to Peter Tay of the Tourism Congress of the Philippines (TCP).
The government news agency PNA reported that Tay, who is based in Boracay and serves as vice president for Visayas of the TCP met this week with Sec. Frasco.
“I’m glad she (Frasco) agreed that 6,500 is indeed a small number and they will revisit the carrying capacity, Peter Tay said.
.
Boracay’s regulated carrying capacity is based on a 2018 DENR study with the ideal 19,215 tourists in any given day or about 6,405 arrivals a day based on an average three-day stay.
The report also cited Tay as saying that the current capacity is not balanced with the available accommodations on the island at present ranging from 12,000 to 14,000 rooms.
