The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has stopped the exportation of Philippine sugar to the United States for crop year 2020-2021.
Under Sugar Order 1-A, series of 2020-21 the SRA amended the policy for the current crop year which classified 7% of crops as class A sugar, or for export to the US. All sugar produced here are now class B, or for domestic use.
The SRA’s move to scrap sugar exports to the US stemmed largely from appeals of sugarcane farmers from Iloilo who earlier lobbied with the national government due to lower market prices of exported sugar to the US.
The Iloilo Provincial Board in session has passed a resolution authored by Board member Matt Palabrica which called for the stopping of sugar exports.
Sugar planters associations are also projecting a decline in the volume of sugarcane production in the country on top of depressed prices for exported sugar. (with Bert Ladera/ Iloilo capitol)
